It's a Brand New Day.

I'm not proud that this the song I woke with in my head, but there it is.  Thanks to Joss Whedon for providing such a wealth of perversely appropriate material:

This appeared as a moral dilemma 'cause at first
It was weird though I swore to eliminate the worst
Of the plague thad devoured humanity it's true
I was vague on the "how" - so how can it be that you
Have shown me the light?

It's a brand new day
And the sun is high
All the birds are singing
That you're gonna die.
How I hesitated
Now I wonder why
It's a brand new day.

All the times that you beat me unconscious I forgive
All the crimes incomplete - listen, honestly I'll live
Mr. Cool, Mr. Right, Mr. Know-It-All is through
Now the future's so bright and I owe it all to you
Who showed me the light

It's a brand new me
I got no remorse
Now the water's rising
But I know the course
I'm gonna shock the world
Gonna show Bad Horse
It's a brand new day

And Penny will see the evil me
Not a joke, not a dork, not a failure
And she may cry but her tears will dry
When I hand her the keys to a shiny new Australia.

It's a brand new day
Yeah the sun is high
All the angels sing
Because you're gonna die
Go ahead and laugh
Yeah I'm a funny guy
Tell everyone goodbye
It's a brand new day!

Welcome to the future everyone.  I can't wait.

Julie..
Wow...I so think the way that you do. I want to gush about how much I loved your book and your blog...but I will shrink it all down to a "thank you" and a slight bow.
I lead a reading group in Florida, and for this year's Holiday read (we have tried to do something a bit unusual each year). I am having everyone read Julie and Julia and then make a recipe from Mastering the art of French Cooking to compare what they went through to your book and your experiences...it is a coed group, so should be very interesting...

I was wondering if you had any thoughts or ideas to share that I can bring to the group? I understand how busy you are and would certainly understand if you were unable to help. If at all possible, though, I may be reached at rsblockmtm@gmail.com

thank you even considering this, and best of luck with the movie. I am eagerly anticipating it and all your other work yet to come..

with fond admiration!

Hi Julie,
I don't watch Buffy, and I'm sorry that I have no idea what this rhyme song thing is about. But I bought your book. And I love it. I have about 15 pages left and I can't bring myself to finish it. I will tomorrow... after this wine in my glass here. Something about your writing, it pulls you in like an old friend. Cheesy, bad, but true. I have a blog too. It's about why everyone should have a garden. If you are interested in growing your own leeks one day when you're not in the city, check it out. Or before! http://growiteatit.blogspot.com

Bah,
Now that song's stuck in my head. Time for a Buffy Marathon.

I'm off to go lose at Emily's (of Casserole Crazy) Brooklyn Casserole Contest. I tweaked a tried and true Beer Cheese Soup into a casserole. Really good, but not a winner. Dang.

I totally watch Buffy, but I don't recognize this song, so I'm guessing it's from another show? Could it be Angel?

Buffy rocks. I also read your book, and really enjoyed it. :) Good luck with the movie!

I'm such a dweeb, I had to go look up the lyrics, and I see they're for Dr. Horrible Sing Along. Which makes me wonder...do you love ALL Joss Whedon, or esp Buffy? In our household, we love Buffy. We own the series, and the comic books of Season 8. But we couldn't get into Angel, or Firefly (though Serenity was great). Weird, huh? I think it's a genre thing. Liked the teen angst of Buffy, not so much the detective feel of Angel or the Western/space feel of Firefly.

Do you watch Battlestar Gallactica? No Whedon, but an awesome show nonetheless.

Hi Julie,
it's kinda funny but I started cooking with MtAoFC when I was 10 and it's been with me ever since. I even got it signed by Julia before she passed on.
I notice we also have the same birthsign and Chinese sign; hmmmmm
loved your book- hope you are still enjoying cooking:-)

Oh my gosh. This is too cool.

Okay, so i am a high school student from like, the other side of the world, i think. Well, i currently reside in china, actually. But anyway, for my English class, we have independent reading assignments. And i chose to read your biography/memoir (right?), Julie & Julia. We have to make our on blog posts, and maintain our own blog, and whatnot. And wow, i happen to stumble upon your blog, what are the chances of that! This is so wild.

Your book actually kind of inspired me to do something similar. But instead of tackling a book like "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", i am trying to bake my way through any baking cookbook i can find. Cookies, cakes, muffins, i dare to try anything=).

Anyway, i just wanted to let you know, I really do like your book. And congrats on it becoming a movie!=)

I'd sooo love to hear from you! But i do get that you have a life to go on with, and you are a busy person, but if you have the time, would you mind checking my blog out? Its: [http://blogs.saschina.org/stephanie01px2010/]

I really dont think my blog is any good, since i'm really not that great with technology. I'm not that mature in thinking critically and analytically either, but yeah. I'd really appreciate it! Please dont feel obliged to check it out, thats really the last thing i;d want, to take time out of your life. I just thought that it was really cool that i accidently stumbled upon an author whose book i'm currently reading=)

I live in Nassau, The Bahamas. I am a librarian at a school. We have a staff/parent book swap going on that lives in my office. A teacher I have grown to truly admire her taste in books suggested I read Julie & Julia.

I HAVE to tell you how very much I am enjoying it and I am only on page 43!!!!!!

I found myself waking up at 5am and turning on the light so I could read a bit before having to get up. And I have to confess, I can't wait for school to be over and the weekend to begin so I can close out the world and stick my nose back into your book.

I have printed off a few pages from your blog to read also and also gave a copy to the teacher who turned me on to you!

Also emailed my mom and two good friends to suggest they stop whatever they are doing and run out and find this book.

I also love to cook and can't wait to make the potato and leek soup, and suspect there will be many other recipes that I will try as a result of your treasure.

I am also going to suggest our Culinary Arts teacher read the book and that we get a copy of it for our library. We are a school of 900 children, pre-school to an IB program for year 13.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so glad you gave up temp work.

Isn't school over yet?!?

So, why does it feel like yesterday? I'm a struggling Thrifty Chick, alias Shopping Golightly. I started The Thrifty Chicks on blogger about 3 weeks ago. It consumes me. Perhaps it always has. My friends told me they’d help & contribute, but they’ve yet too.

My friend mailed me your book a few years back demanding, "You need to read this, she writes like you!" It was the first adult-level book I read since the car accident. (I'd been stuck in the 8-12 year old level.) It made me want to suck the marrow out of life. It made my youngest daughter want that eggbeater. It made me want to struggle to find my identity as I help my two daughters, Poet and Piper, find theirs. (Ironically I think theirs are in their names.) I could write so much more but that would turn you into my therapist & my husband's between business cards at the moment so the $$ aren't there.

So, can you peek at The Thrifty Chicks on blogger and tell me if you think tomorrow will be different? It’s about changing the way Americans shop & shopping in non-profit thrift stores, reducing our carbon footprint in our shopping habits and getting over America’s hang up that if it’s not new it’s Eeww!” I did right a response to Obama's acceptance speech.

Right now, I feel really, uh, alone. That’s sounds dramatic. But I do! They told me to do this & now I feel like I’m in a field of crickets and the sun ain’t about to rise.

Your Friend,
Amy Turosak, aka Shopping Golightly

You, by way of your book, saved me twice in the last three days. I'm training for the Feb 19 Austin AT&T marathon; but I live in Madison, WI--so I'm training in snow and ice and all kinds of winter shit. It's no doubt apparent that this little exercise thing I began for my health has become its own disease. I'm not sure why I do this. I'm neither sleek, nor young, nor fast. I'm one of those slow, slightly overweight plodders. I'm 56 years old. And I've done four marathons over the last 11 years. I should know better. But I keep doing it.

Saturday The Training Schedule demanded an 18-mile run, and after the obligatory 4 miles with my dog Jazz in an ice storm (she MUST have her run no matter what), I retreated to the treadmill for the last 14. It's hard to say which is worse because I’d rather be outdoors, and the treadmill just grinds the soul; but I didn't think I should get any wetter and colder so I picked whatever dryer and warmer circle of hell the treadmill represents. And I listened to Julie & Julia. And yes, the run was awful; but I was entertained and pleasantly distracted enough that it was bearable. I went the distance. Thank you so much.

This morning was an 8-miler at dark-thirty--still tired & achy from Saturday. Back on the icy road with cryogenic windchill, but at least the weather was clear. I finished J&J. The statement about the only better death than Julia’s was a terminal brain tumor, killing the plutocratic mf, etc was the best line in a book of great lines. I still had five miles in that hideous run, I was slipping on the ice even with my little cleat-y Stabilicers, hurting like hell with every muscle aching, in the dark surrounded by The Great White Cold--and I was laughing my ass off. It was so good, I stopped to backlight my iPod so I could see which track it was on so as to share it with my husband when I got back to the normal universe of central heating. And when I did, he laughed his backside off too.

I loved your book. And I adore you for getting me through two really awful runs in much better humor than I would have thought possible. Looking forward to the movie.

Rock on & much success.

Hey, Julie, are you working on a new writing project? I hope you are thinking of a novel. I think you have a real gift for characterization. The Julia and Paul passages in your book offered a tantalizing glimse of your talent in that area. You really brought Eric and your family and friends came to life as well. As much as I enjoy the self-depreciating humor and your Sam Pepys writing, I think you could create a work of fiction that would surprise even yourself. Perhaps that can be your next challenge now that you know what you are capable of achieveing? I can not believe you met Meryl Streep and she is going to be in your movie. What a flipping kick in the pants! Good luck to you in 2009!

I just finished your book and loved it. It's so great to know there are others out there who have meltdowns over things that to others might seem less than catastrophic. I'm also in kind of a dead-end job, and I've written half a novel, so your book is the sort of kick in the ass I need right now. I had no idea they were making a movie out of it! With Meryl Streep! How cool is that? I think it's a good thing it seems surreal--otherwise, you'd have crossed the veil between Ordinary People and Celebrities. Maybe you already have--I mean, they're making a movie about you, for Christ's sake. But if it's not too late, don't go over there! Or at least come back. We need you here. And please write something on your blog.

Dear Julie,

I know that you get fan mail all the time, and when I tried to google your email address online, I realized that I wasn't crazy enough to go through the rigamarole of finding your real address, and that you probably have to deal with those people on a regular basis and that I wasn't going to add to your misery.

I loved it. The book, I mean. My mom, the crazy junior leaguer that bought an audio copy for herself so that we could read it at the same time, bought it for me for Christmas. And I loved it.

I am a Julie, from Atlanta, living in Boston, going to law school, waking up in the mornings wondering what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. And you made me feel better. So much in fact, that I may attempt Coq Au Vin. Probably not within the next year, but I have to build myself up. That sort of thing takes time.

I found the Joy of Sex in my father's closet. I am a failed actress with dreams of the stage and plans to seduce celebrity actors with a penchant for the untoward and not particularly couth taste buds. And I really just want to thank you.

Thank you, because your book was wonderful. And Julia Childs' a day ago didn't mean shit to me. I just finished the last page in your book in tears, and I'm still not sure why. Your writing was inspiring, the "project" was insane, and I'm so proud of you. And I don't even know you. So thank you.

Bottom line, I think we could be great friends. And I'm an aspiring writer, and would love to be given advice if you had the time. However, it's very likely that you probably don't check this mail very often, and even if you do, are too busy to write back. And that's cool, I understand. But I really appreciate your outlook, and your tenacity, and I hope you got everything that you wanted out of this, and are still a terror in the kitchen when it comes to french cooking.

Thanks!
Julie Anne

I'm about half way into the book and loving it. I can't believe you bought yout meat at Western Beef on Steinway. We live close to that and only went in there once...the place scared me. I'm clearly a pansy. Agree that Pathmark is skanky - it's best for late night bumfight watching. I whine and make my Fiance drive me into the city to go to Zabars & Fairway. I just finished reading your book and I loved it!!! To be at the crossroads of life and have this one idea end up changing your whole life!! What an amazing and wonderful thing to have happen. What you said about Julia when she died, about your claim being on the one who pulled another out when they were drowning was so moving. After I finished reading your book, I wanted to go do something life changing, but alas, I had to do the laundry. Thank you so much for sharing this time of your life with us.

By the way, it's even better that you are a Buffy fan!!! Buffy is, hands down, one of the best shows ever to grace TV and the only show I have ever wanted to own every season of.

Thanks so much and I wish you all the best in the future!

Julie,

What were you thinking in using that language. I have had to put the book down, can't recommend it to my mature and Christian friends. Wouldn't recommend it to any one else based on the bad language. It cheapens the otherwise fine work you did and takes all the fun out of the sarcasm and witty remarks. I can't imagine that Julia would approve having those horrible words linked to her work. I can't imagine they'll be used in the movie. Come on girl, what was the point?

1:42 PM
Blogger Liz Zélandais said...

Julie, please keep using YOUR language and your voice despite the censors posting herein (or even thereout) who wish to sanitize it so they can read it to their Sunday school friends. That "language" got me through an 18-mile training run listening on my iPod in the ice & snow last winter. Laughed my way through the pain.
