Julie Powell: Author, Bon Vivant... Vegan?
So, got back from Argentina, went to the doctor. Looks like Julie is going on the straight and narrow for awhile. My cholesterol is, apparently, a BAD scene. And this was from blood taken BEFORE Buenos Aires. Jeesh. So I'm off the red meat and dairy. Have also taken it upon myself to quit drinking and smoking (well, mostly.) Doing yoga. Living like a goddamned monk.
What is sustaining me as I pass through this vale of tears? Two things. First, my discovery of the delightfully goofy Flaming Fire:
More importantly, though, is the green market in August.
I know I've always been a greenmarket naysayer, and I still am annoyed by some of the smug foodies who shop there. But the market itself is great - the tomatoes this year are enough to live on. Which is good, because they're pretty much all I can eat.
Not pictured - Hatch green chiles!!!!! Heaven! Though it's hard to think of anything I want to eat with them that doesn't involve cheese and/or bacon.

I just finished your book today Julie and let me tell you, I am a huge fan! I absolutely adore your attitude towards life and your absurd way of putting things.
I am a twenty year old college student and I'm diving into the culinary world soon and your book gave me a very good outlook on what I could be expecting.

To avoid food shock, get some smart balance shortening and maragarine. Lets you bake pies, biscuits etc, but have FAB cholesterol still.
Try Jane Brody's chili non carne (from her Good Food Book.) It tastes real, but is good for you, and easy to prepare. Her chicken with curry and yogurt is also awfully nice and real tasting - if you are allowed chicken.
And lastly - consider grapeseed extract. I know, I know, I AM in California - but our HMO doctor suggested it (and he is NOT a hippy dippy type) instead of statins and it has made a BIG difference.

Girl, those tomatoes are fabulous. I have some heirloom tomatoes on the vine at my house right now and can't wait until their ripe. The cherry tomatoes are probably the most prolific though. And although I'm not a huge hatch chili fan, I know that Charles loves the hatch chili dishes at Chuy's! Oh, wait, that's probably not healthy either, huh? But you must miss Chuy's. ;-)
In order for you to feel better about not eating meat, I will eat twice as much in your name. Although, I am supposed to have some bloodwork done and after reading about what happened to you I'm not so sure I want to. I love food - especially the super fattening foods - so much. I'm so torn.
Umhummm.... I was wondering when it was all going to hit the fan... Girl, you're too young to have your health threatened by coronary artery disease. Life and food can be enjoyed healthily without massive amounts of butterfat and meat! And vegetables are wonderful. Maybe this should be your new adventure. Learning to eat as if your life literally depended on it.
Thanks for the kind suggestion. But I am not about to start writing about eating healthily. It just isn't me. I've been eating very healthily and enjoying it and frankly I don't think it's going to help my cholesterol at all - PCOS is PCOS, and lipitor is going to be my new best friend, I know it.
Besides, we all gotta die sometime, and I want to do it having wild sex or eating great steak - possibly both at the same time. Now THAT is me.
OK, that band is pretty out there, and I LIKE out there, but I only got through 1/2 a song...
I don't really know what to think of them; at first I laughed, and then I got creeped out and had to turn it off. But that could be because of the joint I just smoked.
I will say this- they remind me somehow of Shel Silverstein, who was awesome.
Julie - You're seeing the wrong doctor. Cholesterol is good! If you take drugs to lower it, your body just makes more. Don't fall into the trap of low-fat foods. Margarine is something to avoid. PCOS is related to insulin resistance. What needs to be avoided is eating too many carbohydrates (especially refined ones) which raise blood sugar levels. Just check out this article. Julie, your book has inspired our book club to get together for a "pot luck" dinner meeting to discuss your book. (Do the words "pot luck" and Julia Child even belong in the same sentence?) We are each bringing a different French dish to share. I have a feeling both of you would be comfortable at our table!

I would normaly never give advice since my life is sooooo imperfect, but....(you knew it was coming), I read a book that actualy helped me quit smoking. "The easy way to stop smoking" by Allen Carr. It is by no means a masterpeice of literature, but the logic made sense to me. I quit last December, and I have not cheated( even while imbibing). If you have the balls to write a great book, you can quit smoking easily! May the force be with you :-)

I, too, live in a crappy apartment (a basement, not a "loft") with a very loving husband and feel as though I am trying to accomplish something impossible. That something is trying to teach inner-city eighth graders to read and write and actually enjoy it all the while trying to keep them from absolutely trashing my classroom.
