Apologies...

... I am officially the worst blogger in the world.

But I am not dead. And a few things have happened in the last month. Mostly, I won the Quills Award for best debut author, thanks to all you good people. This being a people's choice award, I lost in the food category to Rachel Ray. But seeing as how my fellow losers were Bill Buford, the editors of the Silver Spoon cookbook and Julia Child, I can't complain too much.

The best thing about the Quills Awards was that mine broke. It's this heavy metal and plastic thing in the shape of a book, and the plastic thing came apart from the metal part within about ten minutes, right in the middle of me talking to Al Roker and that skinny Kennedy woman. The awards people were aghast when they found out and want to replace. But hell no. I like it this way. It's so ME...

What I will not apologize for is the Republican bashing a commentor made on the last post. I think it's so funny that people think enough about my political opinions to trash them. It's not as if I wrote a book on public policy, you know? Why on earth would anyone care what I think? I think of the Julie of "Julie & Julia" as a character in a novel. She is a sometimes engaging often aggravating person, her mother's daughter, firm in her belief that anyone who voted for this administration in 2004 contributed directly to the destruction of our country, and she likes to rant. If folks read my book as if it were a treatise on the political landscape of 21st century America, well then, it's almost like they're reading my book to learn how to make souffle. Very wrongheaded.

Shouldn't probably have even addressed that. One more sign that I've become a bad blogger, I actually give a shit what mean posters say... But no more.

Congratulations on your well-deserved award. And about the Republican apologist? After reading the comment, I see little sense in it. She thinks it's unfair to criticize someone just because they have a D or an R after their name? As if political beliefs were random like eye-color. You have no reason to apologize.

Sure, you could choose to ignore the republicans. But that won't make them go away. (Though I wish it would.)

As I see it, there's only one thing to do.

Powell/Roker in 2008.

Who's with me?

Welcome back! Missed ya!

Can't remember if I told you, but I reviewed your book on my blog. This is the excessively long link:
http://dibookblogetc.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/08/julie_and_julia.html

Or you can just Google Di's Book Bloggkz, click on book reviews and scroll down to the August 29 entry. Would LOVE to have you comment since I wasn't able to get down to see you at Books & Books in Miami due to a husband and best friend with very screwed up priorities!

Keep blogging...you were missed!

congrats-- I just got to read your book.
I liked reading it, especially when I fell off the couch laughing so hard. That happened a lot since you have a talent for recounting not-so-funny occasions in a funny way. I'm glad you got the chance to share your experience with the world.
thanks

I can't believe I'm gonna comment on this since I usually just hang around this site like a stalker and try to keep my mouth shut but...this whole Sara thing got my goat. First, yes, I read J's book--my sister gave it to me for my 29th birthday (appropriate, don't you think?). Second, I'm a Republican...or at least, a conservative. Third, I don't give a rat's ass if Julie bashes R's all day long because her insights were funny as hell and I always appreciate a girl who can curse properly. okay, all that said, here's my beef, Sara-wherever-you're-hiding...this is a pluralistic society that was designed for debate. To put down a book because you disagree with someone's personal perspective is horrifically narrowminded....it's like the parents who want to ban Harry Potter because they don't believe in witchcraft. It's that head-in-the-sand mindset that keeps people from truely educating themselves. You can't just keep running from the things that "offend" you; it's highly unrealistic. I'm a conservative Christian (gasp); I loved Julie's book. I don't hold to all of the same tenants that she does...should I? And if by reading Julie's book, I suddenly turn away from all of my prior convictions, were they really convictions? If coming in contact with someone who is "different" causes you such distress that you must amend your views, you didn't know what you thought in the first place. It's a weakness on your part. The beauty of first amendment rights is that everyone-crazy lunatics included--get to stand on their soap box and sound their barbaric yawp.

Julie, you deserve every award you receive for Julie/Julia. I love your fresh, funny and irreverent style. I was so excited to discover that you are an Amherst alum (only slightly cooler than Henry Ward Beecher, of course). I was class of 2004. If ever you get a moment (which I am sure you don't often), maybe you can offer some advice to us journeymen bloggers with big dreams of your kind of success. You have inspired us all to hope for book deals. How did you do it?

Julie, First I wanted to congratulate you on getting your Quill award. I just finished your book and I loved it!!! It has made me want a project. At first I considered trying to cook all the recipes in MtAoFC vol 1 to see if i could do it. But I am not brave enough to eat brains or liver for that matter. Then I thought I could tackle volume 2. Then I decided that this was your project, and I couldn't just steal your project. So now I am trying to come up with a project of my own. I love to cook so I thought maybe some sort of cooking project. But I am a grad student so my project has to be somewhat affordable so that I can keep up the social life of a graduate student which surprisingly (or not so much for those of us who hate grad school) involves a lot of alcohol consumption. Alas, I am now project less and as i have finished your book, have nothing to read.
Anyways sorry I tend to babble. But i just wanted to let you know that you are like Julia Child is to you to someone else.

Our Book Club read your book this past Friday night. With the first taste of the stilton cheese pastries (I can't remember what they were called AND I've loaned my copy of your book to another friend!) we began a night of food and book talk bliss.

Your book was a hit with all of our members, which doesn't always happen. A few mentioned that they plan to give it as a holiday gift.

Thanks!

Holy Crap!

I can't believe no one said anything about you losing to Rachael Ray! That, in a metaphoric nutshell, is what's wrong with the America today.

I caught the Iron Chef throw-down between her and the anorexic and I'm still getting retarded tingles from watching it. Rahael Ray stirring the cranberry curd looked like she was giving the world's most unenthusiastic handjob.

What were you doing at Fleisher's Meats the other day? Not that I'm stalking you, I was on a field trip to hang out at our butcher and get some quality time with Jessica and Josh.

Anyway, I can't wait to read your next one and hopefully this time you won't lose out the popular vote to a potato-head who couldn't cook her way out of a paper bag.
